The goal of the Department of Economics at the University of Crete is to excel in teaching and research. The areas of interest of the Department cover the whole spectrum of Economics, and include microeconomics and macroeconomics, applied and business economics, finance, political economy, economic history, quantitative methods, etc. The faculty members often publish their research in some of the top journals of their fields, which allows the Department to climb very high in the rankings of Economics Departments in Greece.
The Department was founded in 1987. The undergraduate program constantly attracts high quality students who, upon completion of their studies, have excellent career opportunities in the private and public sector, and in areas such as business and consultancy, the financial and banking sector, government agencies, etc. Moreover the graduates of the Department acquire solid knowledge in Economics and in analytical methods that allow them to be accepted in some of the top graduate programs in Economics are related fields in Greece and abroad.
The Department offers a Master’s in Economic Theory and Policy and a Master’s in Business Economics –TIME MBE. The first one started operating in 2002. The goal of the Program is to expand the knowledge of students in: a) the tools and techniques of advanced economic analysis; b) applications of the tools and techniques in issues related to economic policy. TIME MBE was founded in 2016 and it is offered jointly with the Department of Economics of the University of Cyprus and the Business Economics Group of Wageningen University, Holland. In contrast to most of the MBAs in Greece, which provide general knowledge in business administration, TIME MBE focuses on an important area of modern entrepreneurship, the management of innovations.
Finally, the Department offers a PhD program in Economics. Its goal is to engage PhD students in high level research in Economics and to prepare them for a career in academia, research centers, government agencies and highly ranked positions in the industry. A list of past PhDs can be found here.
