The academic year begins on the 1^st of September and ends on the 31^st of August of the following year, according to the academic calendar of the School of Social Sciences. The academic year is divided in two teaching semesters, winter semester and spring semester. There are two examination periods, in February and in June, at the end of each semester, and a follow up exam period in September.

Each semester lasts for at least thirteen full weeks for all courses, tutoring not included. An academic semester may be extended in exceptional cases only, so that the required minimum number of teaching weeks is completed.

An extension of a semester cannot exceed two weeks and is approved by the Rector of the University of Crete, following a proposal by the Dean of the School of Social Sciences. If, for any reason, the number of teaching weeks in a course is less than thirteen, the course is deemed as untaught and, therefore, it is not assessed. Inasmuch as the examination is invalid, the specific course is not included in the degree awarded by the Department.

Make-up lectures can be arranged in exceptional cases in agreement with the attendees of the course, and they are solely announced through the Registrar of the Department.  Make-up lectures are scheduled exclusively for the week preceding the respective examination period.  Teaching material and all relevant requirements for the courses are provided to the students during the first two months of each semester via the eClass learning platform.
