Occupational status is a key outcome in the literature on social mobility. Taking the example of Germany, I focus on the transmission of occupations with similar task contents between fathers and children ("task following") and its effect on intergenerational status mobility. I use an instrumental variables approach, whereby task following is instrumented by the growth of father's occupation or, alternatively, by the degree of certification of the occupation. The results show that a significant part of intergenerational status transmission occurs because children choose occupations similar to those of their fathers.
